Professional Yacht Teak Cleaning, Sanding and Teak Oil Treatment

Neglected teak greys first, then the grain opens up and trapped dirt works its way into the timber.

That greying is a thin oxidised layer on the surface; correct cleaning and sanding bring back the sound teak underneath.

Teak is durable but finite — every sanding takes some of the layer away. So we try the gentlest method first and sand only as much as needed, only where it is needed.

Process

  1. 1. Teak assessment

    The degree of greying, the state of the caulking and the remaining teak thickness are assessed. Whether sanding is needed at all is decided here.

  2. 2. Cleaning

    Soft brushing along the grain with teak cleaner lifts dirt and the grey layer. On most decks this stage alone is enough.

  3. 3. Sanding where required

    Where cleaning was not enough, those areas alone are sanded along the grain, working around and protecting the caulking lines.

  4. 4. Finish and handover

    Teak oil is applied or the deck is left to its natural grey, depending on preference, and handed over with a recommended maintenance interval.

A teak deck is one of the most visible parts of a yacht and one of the most expensive to replace.

Regularly maintained teak lasts for decades; neglected teak opens at the grain, lifts at the caulking, and ends in a full deck replacement. Our aim is to minimise sanding and extend the life of the teak.

Frequently asked questions about this service

How is greyed teak cleaned?
Soft brushing along the grain with a teak cleaner comes first, and on most decks the grey layer lifts at this stage. Where it does not, those areas get controlled sanding along the grain.
Does sanding damage the deck?
Every sanding takes some of the teak layer, so unnecessary sanding should be avoided. We try cleaning first and sand only where required, always along the grain.
Is teak oil necessary?
No, it is a matter of preference. Oiled teak keeps its warm honey tone but needs regular reapplication; unoiled teak settles into a natural grey and needs less upkeep. We do both.
How often should teak be maintained?
Cleaning once a season is usually enough. If you prefer an oiled finish, the oil may need refreshing every 3-6 months depending on use and sun exposure.
