Choosing a Yacht Cleaning Company: 8 Things to Check

Yacht cleaning demands expertise that domestic or office cleaning does not. Leather, teak, gelcoat, lacquer and technical textiles sit side by side on the same vessel, and each requires its own products and methods. The wrong choice can produce a repair bill far larger than the cleaning ever cost. Here is what to look at when selecting a company.

1. Surface knowledge

This is the decisive criterion. A company should be able to explain which product it uses on which surface and why. A wrongly pH-balanced product dries out leather upholstery, aggressive brushing erodes the soft fibres in teak, and incorrect compounding leaves permanent marks in gelcoat.

How clearly a company answers "what do you use on each surface" tells you more about its experience than most reference lists.

2. Scope in writing

A quote should state which areas are included, what work will be performed, and what falls outside the scope. A general phrase like "interior cleaning" means what you expect and what the company has planned may be two different jobs.

Whether concealed spaces — bilge, air-conditioning ducts, locker interiors, under-berth areas — are included deserves particular clarification.

3. Insurance and liability

The team working aboard should be insured, and the process for handling any damage should be defined in advance. This is one of the most consequential differences between quotes, and one that never appears in the headline price.

4. References and comparable experience

It matters that a company has worked on vessels of similar size and specification to yours. A team that performs well on a 12-metre boat needs different organisation and equipment for a 30-metre yacht.

5. Transparency about products and equipment

Ask whether the products used are suitable for marine applications. General household cleaning products are both ineffective on marine surfaces and capable of damaging them.

6. Clear timing and delivery

For pre-charter preparation in particular, the start and completion times should be committed to. An open-ended delivery window disrupts planning during the season.

7. Discretion

Teams working on private yachts should have a clear position on confidentiality. Not sharing images of the interior without permission, respecting owner privacy, and maintaining crew discipline all belong under this heading.

8. Follow-up

A good company advises on maintenance intervals and usage after handover. A sustainable maintenance plan, rather than a one-off clean, means lower cost over time.

When comparing prices

The lowest quote is usually the narrowest one. To compare meaningfully, evaluate quotes against the same scope: which areas are included, how many people, how many hours, which operations.

Comparing prices without first equalising scope leads to treating two different jobs as though they were the same.
