Boat Compounding: How to Fix Gelcoat Oxidation and Yellowing
Why does a fibreglass hull go chalky and yellow? What do the compounding stages do, and when is compounding not the answer? A gelcoat polishing guide.

A fibreglass hull does not hold its original gloss indefinitely. Seawater, salt and above all sun gradually oxidise the gelcoat: the hull goes chalky first, then white boats yellow and coloured boats fade.
This makes a yacht look neglected regardless of her age, and it directly reduces resale value. But as long as the oxidation stays superficial, it is reversible.
This guide explains what boat compounding actually does, what stages it involves, and where it stops being the right answer.
What gelcoat is, and why it goes chalky
Gelcoat is the outermost layer of a fibreglass hull — a pigmented, glossy resin coat protecting the laminate beneath it from water and UV. Unlike paint it is a thick layer, and that thickness is what gives you a chance to correct it.
The chalking happens like this: UV breaks down the resin bonds at the gelcoat surface. The surface roughens on a microscopic scale and scatters light instead of reflecting it cleanly. What you see as "chalky" is exactly that.
On white hulls the process also shows as yellowing; on dark hulls it appears as fading and chalking — that white dust left on your hand when you run it along the topsides.
The key point: this damage is superficial, confined to a thin layer. The gelcoat underneath is sound.
What compounding actually does
Despite what the name suggests, compounding is not a coating process. What it does is remove that thin oxidised layer under control and bring out the sound, glossy gelcoat beneath it.
So compounding does not add anything — it takes away, in measured amounts. That is why it cannot be repeated indefinitely, and why choosing the right compound grade is the most critical decision in the job.
The wax or sealant applied afterwards is the part that genuinely adds something: it seals the surface, forms a barrier that slows UV attack, and delays the next round of oxidation.
The work runs in stages
Proper compounding is not a single operation but a program graded to how far the oxidation has gone.
1. Pre-wash and assessment
Salt, grime and algae residue are removed. Then a small test area establishes which compound grade the hull actually needs. Skip this and you either work more aggressively than necessary or waste time achieving nothing.
2. Cutting compound
Heavy oxidation starts here. Cutting compound removes the oxidised layer quickly but leaves machine marks (holograms) behind. It is never left as a final finish.
On a lightly chalked hull this stage is not needed at all.
3. Intermediate stage
The marks left by the cutting stage are removed and the surface is levelled.
4. Fine polish
This is where depth of gloss is achieved — the stage that produces a surface reflecting light cleanly.
5. Protective layer
The surface is sealed with wax or a synthetic sealant. This layer is consumable — it is not permanent and needs regular renewal.
Heat control is the detail that matters most
The most common damage done to gelcoat comes not from overly aggressive compound but from working one spot for too long.
A rotating pad generates friction heat at the surface. Past a certain point the gelcoat softens and burns, and the dull yellowish mark that results can no longer be polished out.
This is why the pad is kept constantly moving in professional work, the hull is done section by section, and surface temperature is monitored. Working in direct sun on an already-warm hull compounds the same risk.
When compounding is not the answer
The limit of compounding is the thickness of the gelcoat. It is not the right solution when:
- The gelcoat has thinned too far. On a hull compounded repeatedly over the years, what remains may be down to a risky level. Paint is then the only correct route.
- There is crazing. Fine spider-web cracking is not polished out; it is fatigue in the layer itself.
- Deep scratches have gone through the gelcoat. If laminate is showing, filling and repair come first.
- There is osmotic blistering. That is a structural issue and unrelated to cosmetic work.
An honest assessment makes this distinction before work starts. A hull sold as "compounding will fix it" that then does not come back costs both money and the gelcoat that was left.
How often should it be done?
Once a year at the start of the season is usually enough. Boats kept uncovered with heavy sun exposure do better twice a year.
But what really drives the frequency is the protective layer: on a hull waxed regularly, the need for compounding becomes markedly rarer. Neglect the protection and compounding is needed every season — thinning the gelcoat a little each time.
Regular protection is therefore both cheaper in the long run and safer for the hull.
Frequently asked questions
Will a yellowed white hull go back to its original colour?
Largely yes, as long as the yellowing sits in the gelcoat surface. If the layer has thinned too far, paint is recommended instead — a distinction that becomes clear at the assessment stage.
Does compounding damage the gelcoat?
Not with the right compound grade and heat control. Damage comes from overly aggressive compound or from working one spot too long, which is why the work is staged and tested on a small area first.
Is compounding the same as ceramic coating?
No. Compounding is a corrective process that removes an oxidised layer; ceramic coating is a separate protective layer added to the surface. VERTEX does not offer ceramic coating or antifouling.
Can yellow waterline staining be removed?
That staining is usually from iron and organic residue and is treated separately before compounding. In most cases it comes out substantially.
Better before winter layup or at the start of the season?
Either works, but the start of the season is more common: a freshly applied protective layer is then at its strongest through the months of heaviest sun.
